Strategies for Playing Video Poker Online
While video poker (like any game of chance) is largely about luck; it is one of the few games where you can
actually increase your chances of winning through proper play. It can take a lot of practice to master the game,
but the following tips, will help you play a little closer to that expert level.
The first and probably most important tip, is try to play only machines that offer a full payback pay schedule.
When the payback is not posted, then look at the pay chart on the machine and pick out one that pays the most for a
full house and a flush. The greater the return for these hands then the higher the payback on average.
For example, on a Jacks or Better machine:
| Machine Return |
Machine Payback |
| 6 for a full house / 5 for a flush |
95.2% |
| 7 for a full house / 5 for a flush |
96.3% |
| 8 for a full house / 5 for a flush |
97.4% |
| 9 for a full house / 6 for a flush |
99.5% |
Tip #2: Playing The Max
The maximum number of coins (usually five) and payouts are attached to every machine. It is a smart choice to always
play the maximum number of coins so that you are eligible for the bonus payout for a royal flush. Also make sure the
machine takes all of your coins before playing - in case you hit the jackpot, you want to be positive five coins were
played.
Tip #3: Playing Progressives
Play progressive machines because they can pay large sums for a Royal Flush, which makes the payout more in line with
the difficulty a getting the hand. While this will only happen about once in every 40,000 hands, a large jackpot that
pays on a Royal can make the odds 'worth it', mathematically at least.
Tip #4: Don't Hold a High Kicker Card
This might work when playing at a regular poker table with opponents, but the machine doesn't care about the value of the
second pair, and you have ruined your chances of drawing a better card.
Tip #5: Don't Draw to an Inside Straight
Where you have four cards and need one in the middle to fill a straight, the odds are not in your favor. An open-ended
straight is a better hand, offering two draws for the win versus plugging the middle.
- Hold onto a high pair over a four-card open straight, a three-card royal or a four-card flush.
- Keep a low pair over a four-card open ended straight. The low pair has a better expected value than going for the straight and should be held onto.
- A three-card Royal should be kept over a low pair, a four-card flush and a four card open ended straight. The bonus for the royal flush makes it a worthwhile play despite the odds.
