The Rules of Video Poker

The purpose of video poker is to try and end up with any of the winning combinations of poker hands. The winning arrangements and payoffs are shown on a payout schedule on the machine.

Playing The Game
  • To place your wager, put coins in the machine. The bet has to be made before you draw your cards, and can't be changed once the game begins.

  • Push a button marked "Draw/Deal" after you place your bet. This will bring up your initial hand of five cards.

  • Then choose if you want to hold onto any of the cards and push the "Hold/Cancel" button under the card(s) you decide to keep. If you change your mind and don't want to keep a previously held card push the "Hold/Cancel" button once more to cancel the hold.

  • Be certain there is conformation on the screen that you have held the cards you want. The word "hold" will flash under your held cards.

  • Push the Draw/Deal button a second time to get new cards for those not held.

  • The machine pays off if you have a winning hand and is then set for another game.

Keep in mind the cards will not normally be in order when shown on the screen. Most video poker games will let you know about a hand/potential hand until after the game.

The following are winning 'hands' on standard Jacks or Better machines, ordered top to bottom from the best hands to the worst. Certain video poker games will have different rules, such as tens or better, wild cards, etc.
